In urban dance, particularly voguing and krump, hand gestures that are "reflexive and turned back toward the dancers themselves" prove especially eloquent. These gestures that return to the body hand on heart, on forehead, framing the face seem to manifest a relationship to self, an assertion of identity. In voguing especially, these gestures can signify "this is me," "I am here," "this is who I am » a declaration of existence within a social context where that existence was denied. In krump, they can express "what I carry within me," "my pain," "my inner strength."

Setting aside the precise codes of these dance forms, Isabelle Grosse captures with sensitivity this self-referential dimension, this way the dancer points to themselves, presents themselves, anchors themselves in their embodied identity.
